Tiger Woods won the Ford Championship at Doral yesterday, and did it watching the leader board the whole day. David Toms didn’t quite know where he stood because he wasn’t looking — and he finished tied for second. Here’s what Tiger had to say:
Woods said he could not understand Toms’s approach. “I am never not going to look at it, ever,” he said of the leader board. “I want to know what’s going on, because that dictates what I do. I don’t understand that concept, because it dictates what you do or what you might have to do to play either more aggressively or more conservatively and try to win a golf tournament.”
While Toms’s seventh place on the PGA TOUR’s career money leaders list is nothing to sneeze at, one wonders how much more successful he might have been by paying closer attention to the competition. There’s a business lesson somewhere in there. Is your company missing out because it’s more like Toms than Tiger?
